April 5, 2013 – TAG Education Collaborative (TAG-Ed), the Technology Association of Georgia’s charitable organization dedicated to preparing the next-generation workforce, is collaborating with the Georgia Department of Education and more than 20 other state education institutions, associations and companies to establish the first Georgia STEM Day on May 3, 2013.
STEM Day will be a statewide opportunity for schools, students, teachers, and companies to raise awareness, celebrate and engage in activities involving science, technology, engineering and math (STEM), in order to make the critical connection between the classroom and a student’s future career.
“Our goal is to raise awareness about STEM education and the opportunities for students in exciting STEM related careers,” said Michael Robertson, executive director of TAG-Ed. “It’s estimated that by 2018, Georgia will have approximately 211,000 STEM oriented jobs to fill, so it is crucial that our future workforce be prepared with the necessary STEM skill set.”

Teachers, students and companies will be able to find STEM Day activities, ideas, and the official STEM Day video, courtesy of Definition 6, on TAG-Ed’s website.
“We must do everything we can to help fill the void of STEM professionals in Georgia’s labor market by tapping into students’ passions for science, technology, math and engineering,” said State School Superintendent Dr. John Barge. “STEM Day in Georgia is a great way to highlight the STEM education already happening in schools across the state and to encourage schools to join us in this effort.”
Additionally, participants of STEM Day have the opportunity to be recognized for the Technology Association of Georgia’s STEM Education Awards, held on Sept. 27 in Savannah, Ga.
The STEM Education Awards were created to recognize and honor schools, extracurricular programs, public-private partnerships, science agencies and post-secondary education outreach programs for outstanding efforts and achievement in supporting and promoting science, technology, engineering, and math education in Georgia.
