From Communities in Schools of Savannah: Hurricane Matthew Relief Effort

Please see the information below from Communities in Schools of Savannah:

SAVANNAH, GEORGIA, Monday, October 10, 2016 --Communities in Schools of Savannah is requesting the community's support as we strive to assist our students and families post-Hurricane Matthew.

It has come to our attention that many of our students and families living in the Westlake Apartments, as well as the surrounding area, experienced flooding and damage to their homes during Hurricane Matthew. Many lost everything. In an effort to support our students and families, Communities in Schools of Savannah has initiated our CISSAV Kids Closet Drive. CISSAV Kids Closet is filled with everything from school supplies and personal care items to uniforms and clothing.

CISSAV Kids Closet runs solely off of donations and the items in the closet will be distributed to students at Haven Elementary School as well as students and families at DeRenne Middle School, Myers Middle School, and Beach High School. All donations made to Communities in Schools of Savannah will be used to purchase supplies for students and families as they are located and assessed. We will work with principals of the schools listed to identify the families affected and the distribution process of items will be announced in the next few days. Any remaining funds will be used to support the Communities in Schools of Savannah program.

"It is important to understand that most of our families are low-income and struggle with the most basic expenses. Something like this is catastrophic as most do not own their home, they rent, so therefore the insurances most homeowners think of do not exist for these families," said Catalina Garcia-Quick, Executive Director of Communities in Schools of Savannah. "With students returning to school on October 17, 2016, it's important to us that we continue to provide our students with the resources they need to succeed in the classroom. We want to ensure they are comfortable, have a sense of dignity, and that they feel positive about going to school because they have the things they need."

Immediately we request financial donations or donations of gift cards - specifically VISA, Master Card,  Wal-Mart, Target, & SAMS. Our goal is to purchase what is needed, as needed, so that we may support our families in the best possible way." If you would like to donate specific items, the items immediately requested are
