Henderson Mill Elementary is first Georgia school to earn STEAM certification from Georgia Department of Education

April 20, 2017 – The Georgia Department of Education has awarded Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics (STEAM) certification to Henderson Mill Elementary School in DeKalb County Schools. Henderson Mill is Georgia’s first STEAM-certified school. State School Superintendent Richard Woods presented the certification in a ceremony at the school on April 18.

“Meaningful integration of the fine arts with science, technology, engineering, and mathematics has been proven to produce great outcomes for kids,” Superintendent Woods said. “Our new STEAM certification is all about recognizing schools that are doing an exemplary job integrating the fine arts with STEM subjects, and Henderson Mill is doing just that. Students there are getting great fine arts instruction integrated with STEM subjects and will be better prepared for the future as a result.”

Henderson Mill partnered with a variety of fine arts community organizations to integrate the arts with academic instruction. The school, which employs a music teacher and a visual art teacher, coordinates weekly teacher collaboration between math, art, and science teachers to create strong projects that help students see the importance of applying what they are learning in math and science, with an arts focus.

STEAM is the integration of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics infused with meaningful arts integration. STEAM utilizes the arts as a vehicle for demonstrating what has been learned, while increasing creativity and teaching “habits of mind” that can be applied to any subject. The STEAM Georgia certification program aligns with the STEM Georgia certification program and share a common vocabulary, timeline, and design.
