Program/Unit:Smokey Powell Center for Assistive Technology
Description of Duties:Under general supervision, provides statewide outreach targeting the needs of families and professionals serving children with visual impairments or blindness. Duties include: providing onsite consultation and/or training to schools and homes regarding services needed for students who are visually impaired; visiting homes and local schools of Georgia Academy for the Blind students to facilitate communication and transition; organizing and scheduling low vision clinics, and providing follow-up onsite training in the use of low-vision devices and assistive technology for students who are visually impaired and blind, their teachers, and parents as needed.
Minimum Qualifications:Must possess or be eligible to obtain a Georgia Teacher Certificate in Visually Impaired (VI) or related field (Note: VI certification is required within 2 years of employment). Must have training/experience with, or willingness to learn assistive technology. Must have valid driver’s license. Extensive travel is required.
Preferred Qualifications:

Preference will be given to applicants who, in addition to meeting the minimum qualifications, possess one or more of the following:

  • Master’s degree in Visual Impairment (K-12)
  • Itinerate experience with students who are visually impaired and who have multiple disabilities
  • Demonstrated experience and knowledge of assistive technology for students who are visually impaired or blind including electronic braille notetakers and video magnifiers
  • Certification in Orientation and Mobility
  • Certification as a Low Vision Specialist
Excellent verbal and written communication skills
Essential Job Functions:
Salary/Benefits: Salary based on years of experience and certification. This is a 10-month position paid on a 12-month basis. Salary will be based on the number of days worked. Benefit options include life, disability, dental, vision, and health insurance; teacher holidays, annual/sick leave; and Employees’ Retirement or Teachers Retirement.
