Early childhood LRE refers to the Least Restrictive Environment where children receive their special education services. IDEA regulations require that students receive instruction with their peers in general education settings to the maximum extent possible. LRE for students ages three through five can be provided in a variety of settings, including a regular pre-kindergarten class, public or private preschool program, community-based child care facility, a Head Start program or in the child’s home.
The ECTA Center is a consortium of national experts from multiple organizations funded through the Office of Special Education Programs, U.S. Department of Education. The center provides technical assistance to state programs.
