Curriculum and Instruction

The Curriculum and Instruction Program supports a coherent instructional system that articulates and guides the “what” and “how” of instruction. A variety of education and community stakeholders from across the State work collaboratively to support effective research-based standards and instructional strategies for personalized and innovative teaching and learning. 

As a result, a balanced educational program focused on the whole child is critical in the development of a strong and solid foundation for all students to build upon for future success. Viable academic standards are developed for each content area and serve as the basis for instruction focused on essential knowledge, skills, and enduring concepts that engage students in a welcoming and supportive learning environment.

Georgia Virtual Learning

Georgia Virtual Learning is a program of the Georgia Department of Education specializing in the delivery of digital content for grades 6-12. 

The Georgia Virtual School offers supplemental online courses with highly-qualified teachers and an extensive course catalog including world languages and Advanced Placement courses. 

Georgia Credit Recovery provided a teacherless model to students who have not been successful in an attempt at a core academic course. Georgia Professional Development (coming soon) provides online staff development in a growing number of areas including online and blended learning, cyber bullying, literacy, and math. 

Finally, eSource, through GaVL provides full course content available online and for free to all students, teachers, and parents. The course catalogue includes over 80 approved courses with multiple learning objects throughout each module to match various learning styles. 

Innovative Programs and Research

Innovative Programs and Research (IPR) provides the analysis, research, and tools to facilitate informed decision-making at the Georgia Department of Education. IPR’s work supports the GaDOE’s dedication to the provision of high quality service and support to ultimately ensure that students in Georgia’s public schools graduate ready to learn, ready to live, and ready to lead.

Teacher and Leader Support and Development

The Division of Teacher and Leader Support and Development impacts student achievement by providing programs and resources to enhance teacher and leader effectiveness that include the following: Title II, Part A grant awards; teacher and leader effectiveness systems; and professional learning.

The goal of the division is to promote and support teacher and leader effectiveness to improve student learning in every classroom in the state.

  • Manages effective use o​f Title II, Part A funds at the state and local level.

  • Promotes effective use of professional development funds and activities to support school improvement.

  • Maintains current data to Ensure Equitable Access to Effective Educators.

  • ​Supports the Teacher Keys Ef​fectiv​eness System and Leader Keys Effectiveness System – Georgia’s teacher and leader evaluation and professional development processes.

Georgia’s Systems of Continuous Improvement

The Georgia Department of Education’s strategic plan emphasizes transforming the agency into one that provides meaningful support to schools and districts. The agency has developed a common, continuous improvement framework to ensure that these efforts are aligned across all agency divisions, departments, and programs. The Georgia’s Systems of Continuous Improvement framework focuses on the systems and structures (the “what”) that must be in place for sustained improvement in student outcomes. It also utilizes a problem-solving model (the “how”) to provide a clear process for identifying improvement needs, planning for improvement, and implementing, monitoring, and evaluating the improvement efforts.
