Georgia’s charter schools are showing gains in student
achievement in most areas and are continuing to see steady growth in
student enrollment, according to the Georgia Department of Education’s
2011-12 Charter Schools Annual Report.
“This
report highlights that our intense focus during the past two years on
improving the quality of Georgia’s charter schools is yielding results,”
said State School Superintendent Dr. John
Barge. “With improvements in academic performance across the board, I’m
confident that our charter schools are a great option for parents and
students.”
The report includes data from conversion and startup charter schools, as well as schools within Georgia’s 14 charter systems.
Highlights from the report:
- Georgia
charter schools have outperformed non-charter schools on the
Criterion-Referenced Competency Test reading assessment and the
End-of-Course Test in English language arts and
math for each of the past five years.
- Non-charter
schools have outperformed charter schools on the CRCT math test during
the past five years, while charter schools have narrowed the gap to 0.2%
in 2012.
- Enrollment
in charter schools in Georgia has more than doubled in the last three
years to 130,492 in the 2011-12 school year. Much of the student
enrollment growth is concentrated
within the charter systems; however, student enrollment in conversion
and start-up charter schools continues its annual trend upward –
increasing more than 16 percent from the previous year.
- During
the 2011-12 school year, 11 new start-up charter schools and one new
conversion charter school opened their doors. The total number of
charter schools statewide increased 34
percent from 162 to 217 schools – with the majority of the growth due
to the increase in charter systems across the state.
