Charter Systems

Charter System Information

In 2007, the Georgia General Assembly approved legislation establishing the charter systems.

A Charter System is a local school district that operates under the terms of a charter between the State Board of Education and the local school district in accordance with State Code O.C.G.A. §20-2-2063.2.  A Charter System is granted broader flexibility from certain state rules and regulations in exchange for greater accountability.  An emphasis is placed on school-based leadership, and decision-making, which fosters innovation to improve student achievement.
