Charter Systems

Charter System Information

In 2007, the Georgia General Assembly approved legislation establishing the charter systems.

A Charter System is a local school district that operates under the terms of a charter between the State Board of Education and the local school district in accordance with State Code O.C.G.A. §20-2-2063.2.  A Charter System is granted broader flexibility from certain state rules and regulations in exchange for greater accountability.  An emphasis is placed on school-based leadership, and decision-making, which fosters innovation to improve student achievement.  To date, there are 48 charter systems in Georgia.  Every year, the GaDOE District Flexibility and Charter Schools Division conducts an Annual Report process for charter systems and compiles and conveys this information to the General Assembly on behalf of the State Board of Education in accordance with State Code § 20-02-2070.
