A
Georgia Game-Based Assessment Initiative
Welcome to
Keenville on Planet Peachy Keen! We’re
glad you’re here to meet our friends, the Keens. The Keens live in Keenville and want to help
Georgia’s youngest learners – those in first and second grade – grow and learn important
reading and math skills. Keenville is an
innovative, developmentally appropriate game-based approach to formative
assessment.

Building
early literacy and numeracy skills is critical for students to fulfill their
potential in future learning – leading to improved high school graduation rates,
higher education opportunities, job prospects, and earning potential. Recent legislation recognized the importance
of these skills for Georgia’s first and second grade students. This legislation
represents a challenge and an opportunity.
Traditional
tests are not developmentally appropriate for young learners, and too often
capture only one moment in time. Game-based assessment provides an alternative
that is research-based and adds value for students, educators and parents.
Game based
assessments provide a unique opportunity to:
- integrate learning alongside assessment;
- support and empower the teacher with information to
differentiate instruction for all students, whether they are struggling,
on-grade-level, or advanced; and
- hook students into the fun of learning!

Meet the Keens!
In
Keenville, Georgia students will explore and customize a highly-engaging world
that presents real-life yet playful, age- and grade-appropriate problem sets
and critical thinking tasks. The game uniquely integrates foundational literacy
and math concepts in a fun, engaging, story-based educational experience. And
best of all, it’s not a T-E-S-T!
Student
performance will be captured in a user-friendly, actionable dashboard that
gives teachers the information they need to help understand where
their students are in the learning continuum, where they need to go next, and what
targeted support they need.
The goal is
to truly integrate teaching and learning, shortening the time between gathering
information about what the student has learned, is still learning, and
instruction. Timely and actionable data
has the ability to empower teachers to provide additional opportunities for
their students to succeed and grow. Keenville has been designed by Georgia
educators to measure the state’s adopted educational content standards and provide
important skill-building activities – all in the form of a game.
